One day....

This isn't really part of my Challenge, just some random thoughts.

I often say 'I'll do that one day' with regard to various projects I have.  I've realised that 'one day' really means 'never' unless I make a specific point of doing it; so I've decided to designate certain days here & there as 'One Days'.  On those days, I'll do some of the things I've put aside.  For instance, today might be some sewing that I've been meaning to do 'One Day'.  Another One Day will be for finishing off some of the jewellery and things I've made at my silversmithing class.

The point of designating One Days is so that I can look around and decide which of the minor projects I feel like doing.  In the past,  if I had decided that I was going to do sewing on a certain day, but when that day comes, I don't feel like it, previously, I've done nothing.  With this system, I can use the time to do whatever I feel like doing instead - that way, I'm still doing something, but I have the freedom to chose what.  Limiting the number of things on my One Day pile means that I'm not over-faced with too many things to chose between.

The One Days are not for major projects, as those tend to happen when the time is right for them, nor are they specifically for Challenge projects, although that might be the case at some point.  They are for all the little things that get put off, and pile up, and cause me to look at the pile and despair!

So here's to One Day, being clear of many of the little piles of 'stuff' that I mean to do!

Wish me luck ;)

One finished, some rearranged

I've finished my 5 new foods!  The last one was Kiwi Berries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actinidia_arguta ), which Himself called an abomination unto Nuggan, but I thought were delicious!

Other things which are changing on my list:  I very much doubt I'll get to Germany at all this year, as the most likely time I would be able to now clashes with at least one course I've enrolled on (possibly two courses, if I get accepted onto the second one as well!)  So this one returns to my bucket list from my 40by40 one.

However, I am visiting my Mum in a few weeks and I'll be spending some time with a friend of mine who is bringing her school group over from Germany for a few days, and during this time I'll get to visit Stonehenge and go on a Thames river cruise, neither of which have I done before, so for all I am removing one from my list, I'll be adding two!

Right, now it's time to go & update my original list!

Film I wouldn't have seen....

On Thursday, I was invited by a friend to go & see a film.  I thought about it; the film was only on for the one showing: I'd have to miss my German Class.  However, it was a German film (subtitled in English), so I would still be getting my dose of German for the evening.  Or so I thought.

The film was called Verhängnis (Fate) by Fred Keleman showing at the Tyneside Cinema as part of the AV Festival's "Slow Cinema" season.

Initially the dialogue was in Spanish according to my friend who is fluent in Spanish (I couldn't hear any of it!)  The next dialogue was in Russian.  I could hear that, as most of it was shouted.  There were about five lines of German, inaudible.  I know it was intended to be a slow film, but this one was 80 minutes (that felt like 5 hours) of sheer boredom.

I'm not usually averse to art films, or foreign films, however all in all, I should have gone to my German class!!

Bifrost

On Friday, I went out to the Coast to see the Global Rainbow (http://www.tynetown.co.uk/news/global_rainbow ).
The only photo I took that came even close to a true representation of the Violet colour.

My best photo of the experience.
It was truly beautiful, with the full spectrum of colours, including a Violet which was more sensed than seen.

I am using this one for the "See the Northern Lights" entry to my Challenge...

I was there with my friend Jo, and she called it Bifrost (the Norse Rainbow Bridge to Asgard).  It is thought that the Norse folk might have considered the Aurora Borealis to be Bifrost.  Since this Northern Light-show was a veritable Rainbow Bridge, I am reckoning that this counts for my challenge, and if I do manage to see the real Aurora, then that will be a bonus!

(My reasoning for this one is that most of the things on my list are things that I can cause to happen, but the Aurora isn't one of them, since it depends rather on the state of Sol!)

Charis Victoria is off adventuring

Having done one of my Challenges, (the spider one) I also need to update my list with one I have regrettably decided not to do.  I am removing 'make Charis Victoria consistently profitable'.  I have decided to do this for a number of reasons; the foremost being I am busy with something which will hopefully become a new career, and I want to focus my energy on that.

Other reasons include that I was treating it as a hobby AND a business, and it wasn't really working as either.  I felt pressurised to make things and sell them, so that the business side of it would work, but I stopped enjoying making things as a hobby.  So, what I'm planning on doing now is make things as & when I feel like it, and if anything sells, then so be it :)

I'd had three potential events that clash with other (more important to me) things such as family gatherings and so on, and it made me focus on what my actual priorities are; so, Charis is off exploring the aether and will return with freshly discovered items to make into wonderful contraptions in due course!

This does leave me with a gap in my list... but I'm sure I'll think of something before long!

Arachnophobes beware!

I managed one of the scariest of my 40 things at the weekend.  ToH & I were in Leeds visiting his folks, and we were having a wander around the Arndale Centre in Cross Gates (about the only time I ever manage to drag him out in the vicinity of any shops!) and Morely Exotic Animal Rescue Centre had several different critters there to show off. http://www.morleyexoticanimalrescue.moonfruit.com/

(I am not responsible for the content or layout(!) of any external websites!)

Stinky Dee (a skunk) and several snakes and lizards were there, including a beautiful Madagascan Ground Boa, and an albino corn snake.

However, the star of the show for me was a young Chilean Tarantula.  They'd only had him/her for a few days, and he/she didn't have a name (or even a known gender!)

Before I could think too hard about it (i.e. be terrified!) I asked if I could hold it.  Below is proof that I have done this challenge!

It was a lot less scary than I thought it would be... The spider was so light, and actually quite lovely to hold!  It moved about a little bit, which was a bit more worrying, but it barely even tickled.

I'm so proud of myself for managing this one, and on the spur of the moment as well!

Making a start...

... on a few different things.

Yesterday I started making my corset with my friend K.  We'd previously sorted out the pattern pieces, but this was the day that scissors met fabric for the first time.  I've discovered the usefulness of making a calico mock up, as the dimensions were not quite right, so I've got a bit of sewing to do at home now, to make sure that the new pieces are OK.

I'll keep up to date with this project now and again, as it's likely to be quite a long-term thing.  I'll try to take photos of it at each major stage, so hopefully there will be a pic of the calico mock-up soon.

I've finished one of my Classic Classics in the book-reading list: Frankenstein.  I'm glad I've read it at last (I really felt that it was a book I should have read, as a good little Goth ;)  ) but I don't know that I would want to re-read it, as it is so sad in places.

I've got some flower bulbs to try to add some colour to the garden, so when the weather warms up a bit, I'll put them into some pots, and hope that they grow!

Hmmmm, I'm sure there was something else... Oh yes!  I tried Samphire a couple of days ago.  I remember reading a poem with a reference to samphire in it when I was at school, and wondering what it tasted like, and it was on offer in Tesco, so I decided to try it.  Very salty, even too salty for Himself, who likes salt.  Possibly it would have been nicer steamed, and in a smaller amount, but so far, not one I'd want to try again.  Ah well, can't win 'em all - I liked figs, adored Bilberries and quite liked the Turkish sweets I had, so on balance this part of the Challenge is doing well :D The 5-new-foods project is nearly done, I think... only one more thing to try now.

I'm planning a bit of a re-think of the list, as some of the things are outside my budget at the moment.  As I've said before, even if some things on the original list don't get done, as long as there are 40 things by the end of the year, I'll be happy; the list is more of a set of suggestions / an aide-memoire as it were.  One of the new things on the list will be 'Make a Dragon'.  I decided that, since it's the Chinese Year of the Dragon, I would make a point of getting this project onto my list, and therefore hopefully done this year!

I've been collecting various bits of interesting junk, that I now want to recycle into a sculpture.  The idea has grown from 'a something' to 'a dragon' and it may well morph into something else in the doing, but notionally, it's going to be a dragon.

Since the dragon will be quite a big sculpture, it will probably have to wait until the weather warms up a bit, as I imagine that some/all of the making of it will have to be done in the garden, as I'm envisaging this critter is going to be fairly large, and be a garden 'ornament', rather than anything else.

Wish me luck!
